In Alcaudete, history permeates every corner. A crossroads of paths, located in the Sierra Sur region, it lies in direct contact with the lands of Granada and Cordoba. Its houses spill down the hillside, embracing its two most distinguished buildings: the medieval fortress (an example of a fortress on the last frontier with the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada) and the Church of Santa María la Mayor; expanding in a ring shape, from which one can see its rich olive groves and orchards.
The fortress consisted of a keep, or tower, and five walls. The tower, made of ashlar masonry, is square and about 40 meters high. It has two floors, each a large hall with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and a window on each side.
