The mural paintings that decorate the Pantheon must have been executed in the first half of the 12th century. The pictorial cycle begins with the scene of the Annunciation, and ends with the Crucifixion.
The scene of Christ in Majesty, surrounded by the Tetramorph, is located in the vault of the central space. Christ appears framed by the mystical almond, blessing with his right hand, and in his left holding a book on which is written EGO SUM LUX MUNDI (I am the light of the world). Christ is seated, with his feet resting on the ground. Against the blue background with stars, the letters alpha and omega stand out on either side of his head.
