The lagoon is declared a natural reserve and is located in a geomorphological unit belonging to the Timanfaya National Park. On its eastern margin there is an elevation of the terrain corresponding to a volcanic crater whose last eruption dates back to the 18th century and on its western margin is located a black sand beach where you can see deposited olivine. El Charco Verde has acquired its greenish hue due to a type of algae of the Ruppia maritime species that lives inside, in addition to the sulfur contained in its waters.
