Art print. Almería with Cabo de Gata in the background
The city of Almería was founded in 955 AD by Abd al-Rahman III on a site previously occupied by other cities such as the Iberian Urci and the Roman Portus Magnus. It played a fundamental role during the Caliphate of Córdoba, becoming the most important port of Umayyad al-Andalus. It reached its peak during the Taifa period in the 11th century, becoming a commercial and cultural center under the reign of Al-Mu'tacin. After its incorporation into the Crown of Castile in 1489, the population was decimated by earthquakes, plagues, and pirate raids.
