XL sheet 50x50 San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, BIZKAIA
Art print from the Spain Series. Hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
On the island of Gaztelugatxe there is a hermitage dedicated to San Juan. Next to it there is a small shelter that allows protection from frequent storms. The access is spectacular, a narrow path that starts from the mainland and crosses over the rocks by a stone bridge, allows you to reach the upper area of the islet, after ascending 241 steps.
The islet is crossed by tunnels and there are numerous arches. Stone beaches open on its sides.
The small church dedicated to the Beheading of Saint John dates back to the 10th century.
In 1593 it suffered a privateer attack at the hands of Francis Drake in which it was looted. This was one of the many incidents it has suffered throughout its history as it has burned down several times.
